I have known Patty Sutton for several years. She was the Surgical Services Director for two of the hospitals in Corpus Christi, Texas–Spohn Memorial and Spohn Shoreline. I worked closely with her as I was the Regional Director of Accreditation and Regulatory Services for these and their other four hospitals. Patty brought a great deal of expertise to Spohn–which was solely needed. The operating rooms were having a great deal of problems prior to her arrival. She seemed to quickly fix a lot of issues–some of which were causing potential patient safety problems. She has a very good way of quickly analyzing issues and working through relationships to fix them. She is respectful to others and earns respect back. She is a system-oriented and analytical thinker. During our facility’s Joint Commission surveys I quickly saw we had big issues in our smaller community- based hospital with OR managerial expertise–especially around the important issues of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. Patti came to the aid of these small hospitals helping us not get as many citations–and then helping build competencies as we worked to correct identified problems. This required additional work on her part that was not part of her ordinary assigned tasks. She is a team player and quick to help in times of crisis. Patty seemed to develop good relationships with surgeons enabling her to work well with them in good times and effectively set limits when it was called for. She is empathetic and compassionate towards patients and is patient-centered in her approach. I would think any organization would be better off with Patti as part of their team.

This autobiography clicked my heart. The courage of Patricia Sutton in sharing how she got rid of a toxic relationship and raised the kids singlehandedly is plausible. Everyone must go through this book if you are dealing with work-life balance. You won’t complain after reading this book.
